Do Rain Gardens Produce Mosquitoes?

"); document.write("

As we seek to manage storm water runoff to ease non-point source pollution, how does what we do affect mosquito production?

Rain gardens have become a part of many water quality projects in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. Designed to hold water for less than 5 days, they would not be expected to provide sufficient habitat for larval mosquitoes to allow them to emerge as adults. However, if there are issues with construction, maintenance, or continuous rain events that cause these sites to hold water longer, they can produce mosquitoes.

Storm water \"Best Management Practices\" (BMPs) are important for protecting water quality. However, some designs can also provide habitat for larval mosquitoes.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MN PCA) has put out a manual that describes many BMPs and some methods to avoid promoting mosquito growth in BMPs. To view the entire manual Click here (PDF file). See Chapter 6 of this manual \"Introduction to Best Management Practices\"
