a reaction to a neurotoxin in a susceptible host. When the tick is removed, the symptoms quickly go away. Cattle are also susceptible.
- Powassan virus
occurs in low numbers in Eastern US, detected as close as MI & WI, but has not been seen in MN. (It is an ehrlichiosis-like illness that can also affect horses.)

- Tularemia (handling wild rabbits)
